Special Needs / Inclusion

Every child should have an equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of school life.  Lightwater Village School values the abilities and achievements of all its pupils and is committed to providing, for each pupil, the best possible environment for learning. We provide an inclusive, quality curriculum that is concerned with imparting knowledge, developing skills and acquiring attitudes and does not discriminate against any group of learners because of ability, gender, race, class or disability.

We aim to:

  • Ensure all children have access to a broad and balanced education
  • Provide access to a full and differentiated curriculum appropriate to the needs and abilities of individuals
  • Ensure early identification of a child’s special needs
  • Provide appropriate support for children identified as having Special Educational Needs
  • Raise self-esteem through positive praise
  • Ensure that pupils with Special Educational Needs take as full a part as possible in all school activities
  • Keep parents informed of their child’s progress and achievement.

Children with special educational needs, whether they have learning difficulties, social difficulties, physical difficulties or exceptional abilities, are identified and taught appropriately following the requirements of the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs.  Individual Provision Plans are developed for children on the special needs register and individual support may be given by Special Needs Assistants who work in the school.  The Special Needs Co-ordinator, class teacher and parents carefully monitor these plans.  The school works closely with external agencies: Education Psychologists, Learning and Language Support teachers, Speech Therapists, Behaviour and Support, Physical and Sensory Support etc. who are available to offer support and advice as required. We pride ourselves on striving to make a real difference for children who are on the Special Needs Register and for them to feel confident to participate as fully as possible in school life.

Accessibility and Disability

Lightwater Village School aims to provide all pupils with high quality education and to support the personal, social, emotional and physical development appropriate for the needs of each individual pupil. Within the School Development Plan we identify focus areas to ensure that all pupils achieve as much as they can, are participants in the life of the school and have full access to the curriculum. The main priorities are:

  • The need to ensure all staff have access to appropriate training and development to support the children in their care
  • To develop resources and facilities appropriate to support the specific needs of individual pupils
  • To liaise with the LA to develop accessibility for future needs.

Further information on how we are developing our provision for those with disabilities and accessibility difficulties can be found in our Accessibility Action Plan 2010-2013 here.

Special Educational Needs and Disability 2014

There is a new approach to SEN, termed as Support and Aspiration.  Schools submitted answers to 14 audit questions to the Local Education Department at Surrey County Council.  Guidance was then received regarding the possible criteria that schools should adhere to and the interventions and offer available to children/parents at the proposed Waves.  Please see below the pdf copy of the Federated Schools' response to these 14 questions.

As of September 2014, Surrey has a dedicated page for the local offer and we would ask you to follow the link below.  We have also uploaded a document entitled ‘The Right Provision at the Right Time’ which sets out succinctly Surrey's position on how they propose to provide young people with the required support to achieve their full potential at the right time.

The Surrey Local Offer page from September 2014 is http://new.surreycc.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/special-educational-needs-and-disability-send/our-local-offer-support-and-advice-for-children-and-young-people-with-send
